Abstract

Harold Urey made many contributions to a wide range of scientific areas and in the latter part of his career he played a pioneering role in the development of planetary science as a recognizable scientific discipline. Although you have to go back to his original papers to appreciate fully the power and originality of his work, perhaps his biggest influence was through the semipopular book The Planets, Their Origin and Development (Urey, 1952), which I turned to in seeking inspiration for this presentation.

It is flattering to be associated with a prize named after one of the greatest scientists of this century. I particularly commend David Morrison for his role in inaugurating this prize which helps legitimize planetary science as a recognized scientific discipline and thereby serves a purpose far greater than merely acknowledging the achievements of a lucky few. I also thank Joe Burns in his role as DPS Chairperson, and Clark Chapman in his role as selection committee chairman, for their efforts. I thank Frieda Urey for making the award and last, but not least, Harold Urey for the posthumous stimulation and insight provided for me by his writings.
