A Novel Precision-Engineered Membrane Microfiltration Device for Capture and Characterization of Bladder Cancer Cells in Urine

Abstract

Non-invasive bladder cancer (BC) detection techniques including standard urine cytology have been unable to substitute or reduce the need for cystoscopy due to several limitations: inadequate sensitivity (often due to paucicellular specimens), ability and tendency to examine only a partial specimen, and presence of confounding background non-urothelial cells. Patients may therefore benefit from an alternative sensitive, rapid and cost-effective BC detection and surveillance assay. This study evaluated the performance and practical applicability of a novel portable membrane microfiltration device for capture, enumeration and characterization of exfoliated tumor cells in urine, and compared it with standard urine cytology for BC detection.
