Characterization of Energy end Mass Transfer In Jets: Revelations of Radial Events: Studies by In-Vitro Flow Visualization Techniques and New Color Doppler Ultrasound Methods With Enhanced Low Velocity Sensitivity

Abstract

In order to study vorticity and other mechanisms by which jets dissipate energy into the surrounding medium, we used laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and ultrasound methods optimized for defining low velocity flow to image pulsatile jets, both longitudinal and transverse to their direction of motion. The LIF technique of dye visualization allows characterization of the scalar mixing rates and concentration distributions. Pulsatile jets with Reynolds numbers 5,000 to 50,000 were also studied by laser Illuminated computerized tracking of LCD particles labelled thermally to illuminate entrainment and provided actual velocity vector measurements.
