Insightful Storytelling on Geodynamics

Abstract

The central goal of Earth science is to understand how our planet works. In the bad old days, because our understanding was so primitive, one could contribute without feeling much constrained by realistic ideas of material properties and processes. Much of geophysics was more closely related to applied mathematics than to physics. The remarkable advances of the past few decades have led the way to a highly interdisciplinary activity in which three aspects are equally important: data collection and analysis, computer modeling of processes, and material physics and chemistry. A well-trained geophysicist should no longer hope to excel with an expertise in just one area.
