Abstract
We live on a planet that has water covering two-thirds of its surface. Our oceans are visible from space and play a central role in how Earth works. Water affects plate tectonism, volcanism, and the evolution of landscapes. Most significant, all life on Earth – and therefore all life as we know it – depends on liquid water to survive.
