In Pursuit of Billion-Year-Old Rosetta Stones

Abstract

If I have learned anything about evolution, it is that the path life takes moves in mysterious ways. If someone had told me 20 years ago that I would wind up a professor of geobiology, I would have laughed. It certainly wasn't something I aspired to in college, where, as a German studies major, I didn't take a single biology class and took only one geology class. I didn't even know that geobiology existed as a discipline at the time!
