Abstract
These two textbooks of meteorology are aimed at different kinds of students, but both cover the main areas of study involved in the physics of the neutral atmosphere: radiative transfer, thermodynamics, cloud physics, photochemistry, equations of motion, the general circulation. Houghton's book is a superb, concise, in-depth introduction for an advanced physics or applied mathematics student; the material is beautifully organized, and the problems are challenging and rewarding. Wallace and Hobbs' book is for a wider spectrum of students; there is good descriptive material, clear derivations and solid, straightforward problems.
