Use of Strong Motion Records for Model Evaluation and Seismic Analysis of a Bridge Structure

Abstract

Strong motion records measured at the Meloland Road Overcrossing have been used to assess Caltrans' current seismic evaluation procedures for short bridges. Finite element models of the bridge were updated by applying system identification to these recorded motions, and were used to carry out parametric dynamic analyses of the bridge's seismic response. These results showed structural demand-to-capacity ratios that were consistent with the bridge's observed seismic performance. In addition, they demonstrated the importance of soil-structure interaction, and provided valuable data for calibrating and future upgrading of bridge abutment modeling procedures.
