Abstract
The interconnection between political structure and economic policy has been a central area of research in the social sciences; it has attracted attention from all the disciplines. Acemoglu and Robinson's new book offers a set of theoretical models that address two central questions. First, why is it that some societies are able to democratize, while others are not and yet others seem to vacillate between democracy and some form of authoritarian government? Second, what sets of economic policies will be enacted by different political regimes?
