Abstract

I. Proton and cobalt resonances were observed in single crystals of Co(NH_2CH_2CH_2NH_2)_3Cl_3 ^3H_2_O. The cobalt spectrum consists of a maximum of seven lines whose separation follows a (3cos^2θ – 1) dependence quite closely where θ is the angle between the c-axis of the crystal and H_o. The spectrum is fully explained on the basis of quadrupole interaction. Two sets of doublets were found for the proton resonances; an inner, very narrow set following a dependence similar to the cobalt resonance, and a pair of outer broad peaks which overlap the sharp peaks. The narrowness of the central peaks is attributed to internal rotation of one of the proton bearing groups. II. A summary is given of various high resolution spectra of compounds related to phosphine.
