Abstract

The Compton scattering of photons by nucleons is described in terms of an isobar model for the resonant states, using a spin 3/2 propagator and couplings at the vertices obtained from a phenomenological analysis of pion photo-production. The full Born term is taken into account, as well as contributions from pi and eta exchange in the t-channel.

Numerical results are obtained at 90[degrees] in the center of mass system for the energy range 300 to 800 MeV which agree substantially with experiment. The recoil nucleon polarization and the cross-sections for polarized photons are also calculated over this energy range.
