Regenerative Medicine

Abstract

Regenerative medicine is a new medical discipline that began explosive growth with identification of human embryonic stem cells in the late 1990's. Much more than stem cells and stem cell product, regenerative therapies are designed to repair and replace diseased organs, often by enhancing endogenous regenerative responses and blunting inflammation. This chapter reviews general trends in the field, highlighting a trend toward use of combination therapies (stem cells plus devices or plus other adjuncts of therapy).
