Polymerization-induced epitaxy. Poly(vinylidene chloride) on graphite by free radical polymerization
Abstract
An ultrathin, epitaxial film of poly(vinylidene chloride) (PVDC) was grown on the basal plane of graphite by free radical polymerization. Direct observation by scanning tunneling microscopy revealed the epitaxial structure of the PVDC film in atomic detail. A pair of chains, each chain in the glide form, constitutes a relevant repeating unit approximately 12 Å in width. All chlorine atoms are located on the surface in a harmonic periodicity with the graphite hexagonal lattice. In addition to the previously studied epitaxy of ring-opened polymers with the all-trans chain conformation, this study demonstrates the generality of polymerization-induced epitaxy to include free radical polymerization with the nonplanar zigzag structure.
