Determinants of the Rural Exodus in Zambia: A Study of Inter-Censal Migration, 1963-1969

Abstract

The second complete census in the history of Zambia furnishes numerous opportunities for the study of social and economic change. In this paper, we analyses district-level changes in population which have resulted from internal migration. We focus upon the question: What are the determinants of migration in Zambia? In particular, we ask: What are the determinants of the exodus of people from the rural districts of Zambia?

Additional Information

This article grows out of a broader study of Zambia, the costs of which are defrayed in part by grant No. 1 R0 1 HD050707-01 from the National Institutes of Health. Grants from the Africa Committee of the Social Science Research Council and by the Population Program of the California Institute of Technology helped to cover the expenses of this particular research effort. We wish to thank Margaret Keiffer for her assistance in preparing the data and Professors Thayer Scudder and David Grether of Caltech for their guidance and criticism.
