Transformations of the Trinity Doctrine in English Scholarship: From the History of Beliefs to the History of Texts

Abstract

The New Testament textual criticism of the 18th century is traditionally viewed as a milestone in the history of the humanities. Why did it not happen earlier? I argue that the predecessors of Bentley and Mill were hardly unaware of doubts about Christianity couched in scholarly terms; the difference is that they chose to engage the critics on the entire history of the Christian church and its beliefs, not on the specific issue of the history of the Bible. From this standpoint, 18th-century English scholars discovered a more concrete and exact approach that was also something of a retreat from a comprehensive view of the faith.
