Carbohydrate content of the membrane protein of Sindbis virus

Abstract

The membrane protein of Sindbis virus is a glycoprotein, containing about 14% by weight carbohydrate. The compounds present include glucosamine, mannose, galactose, fucose and sialic acid. Estimates of the amounts of these various sugars have been obtained. In the case of sialic acid, which was examined more thoroughly, a difference in content was found depending upon whether the virus was grown in chick cells or in hamster cells.
