Bilirubin: Acute Effects in Newborn Rhesus Monkeys

Abstract
Sustained concentrations of serum bilirubin of over 30 mg/ 100 ml were associated with decreased concentrations of molecular oxygen, measured polarographically in the peritoneum of infant monkeys. This effect may precede the intracellular action of bilirubin and contribute to the greater severity of experimental manifestations of hyperbilirubinemia with antecedent asphyxia than of asphyxia alone.
