Observation of the 14 MeV resonance in ^(12)C(p, p)^(12)C with molecular ion beams

Abstract

The lowest T = 32 state in ^(13)N has been observed using H_2^+ and H_3^+ molecular ion beams incident on ^(12)C. The dependence of the shape of the observed anomaly on the molecular-ion species and the target thickness is accounted for using the parameters of the molecular ions and a standard resonance shape determined using a proton beam. In addition to explaining the interaction of molecular ion beams with a thin target, these results provide a technique for extending precise energy-calibration standards to significantly higher energies.

Work performed under the auspices of the US Atomic Energy Commission and supported in part by the National Science Foundation [GP-28027, GP-19887]. The authors would like to express their appreciation to Dave Clark, John Bowen and the operating staff of the 88-inch cyclotron for developing the H_3^+ beam that made part of these results possible. The successful fabrication of the carbon targets was due to the efforts of C. Ellsworth. We want to acknowledge conversations with C. A. Barnes and D. L. Goodstein that aided our eventual understanding of the phenomenon. We are especially grateful to B. G. Harvey for his generous support and continued encouragement during the course of this work.
