Water in mantle minerals

Bell, David R.

Abstract

New experiments suggest that olivine, probably the most abundant mineral in the Earth to a depth of 400 km, can incorporate substantial amounts of hydrogen under water-rich, high-pressure conditions. This work, reported by Bai and Kohlstedt on page 672 of this issue, addresses two basic questions facing those looking at the role of water in the evolution of the Earth: how much is there and where is it stored?
