Electron transfer reactions in chemistry - Theory and experiment

Abstract

Since the late 1940s, the field of electron transfer processes has grown enormously in chemistry, electrochemistry, and biology. The development of the field, experimentally and theoretically, as well as its relation to the study of the other kinds of chemical reactions, presents an intriguing history in which many threads have been brought together. In this article, some history, recent trends, and my own involvement are described.

© 1997 Elsevier Science S.A. Received 16 August 1996. This paper was presented at the International Symposium on Electron Transfer in Protein and Supramolecular Assemblies at Interfaces held in Shonon Village, Kanagawa, Japan on 17th to 20th March 1996. This paper is a slightly modified version of the text of the Nobel Lecture delivered by Professor Marcus in Stockholm on 8 December 1992. It was originally published in Lex Prix Nobel 1992 and is reproduced with permission from the Nobel foundation. © The Nobel foundation 1993. My acknowledgements are to my many fellow researchers in the electron transfer field, notably Norman Sutin, with whom I have discussed so many of these matters for the past thirty or more years. I also thank my students and postdoctorals, whose presence was a constant source of stimulation to me, both in the electron transfer field and in the other fields of research which we have explored. In its earliest stage and for much of this period, this research was supported by the Office of Naval Research and also later by the National Science Foundation. The support of both agencies continues to this day and I am very pleased to acknowledge its value and timeliness here.
