Inside the Earth: Evidence from Earthquakes [Book Review]

Abstract

Seismology has played an important part in the revolution in earth sciences called plate tectonics and is also the central science in earthquake prediction and nuclear test detection. Most seismologists use seismic waves to study earthquakes or to search for oil in the shallow layers of the earth. A small but dedicated group of seismologists, however, devote themselves to the study of the earth's deep interior--the mantle, core, and inner core. Increasingly sophisticated models of the deep interior have been developed over the past 20 years, and these are the starting points for discussion of mantle composition, phase changes, convection, and evolution of the earth.
