A seismologist's view of VAN

Abstract

Although a rigorous statistical assessment of the VAN earthquake prediction method is difficult to make, the correlation between the Seismo-Electric Signal (SES) activities observed with the VAN method and large earthquakes in Greece appears significant. This correlation suggests that SES is a manifestation of regional geophysical activities caused by flow of gas and water in the Earth's crust. Such flow is likely to occur in an area of active extensional tectonics such as Greece. It would be advisable to try to understand the physics of the VAN method by enhancing the existing programs in Greece with not only electric, but also seismological, hydrological and other geophysical investigations. It would be unwise, however, just to export the VAN method to another country as a ready-made prediction tool If the method is to be investigated in other countries, well designed seismological and geophysical investigations would be required before its usefulness for earthquake prediction in the region can be fully evaluated.
