Computer Modeling of Clay Structure and Mechanics

Abstract

Clays are composed of small plate-shaped particles of clay mineral, with lateral dimensions of a few 10's of micrometers or less, many times their thickness. The structural arrangement of the platelets depends on the electrolytic environment of the water through which they settle, but it seems clear that under certain conditions, the structure is one of a more-or-less random arrangement of particles in generally edge-to-face contact.
