Abstract
We have achieved the ability to make quantitative predictions for a wide range of low energy ion bombardment phenomena, and it is tempting to assume that this success reflects a fundamental understanding of the processes involved. In this paper a few examples of outstanding puzzles are given that do not appear to fit within the established paradigm and thus may indicate that our understanding is not as deep as we now think. There are, however, a variety of new experimental and calculational/theoretical tools at our disposal that may be especially appropriate in dealing with these cases.
