The Double Transition in Thoriated UBe_(13)

Abstract

I discuss recent experiments on the heavy fermion superconductor U_(1-x) Th_xBe_(13), with an emphasis on the effects of pressure, magnetic field, and the manifestations of broken time reversal symmetry. I attempt to place the double transition for 0.018 < x < 0.045 within the context of results on the more intensively studied UPt_3. The evidence is strong for multiple superconducting phases with different symmetries in both materials, but the roles played by impurities, crystal symmetry, and the proximity to magnetic order lead to important physical distinctions.
