Latest Information from Seismic Observations

Abstract

Seismology provides the most direct and accurate data regarding the structure of the interior of the Earth. Classical seismological methods determine the velocities of the elastic body waves, P and S. Modem methods supply the anelasticity and a more direct determination of density, as well as refinements in the velocity structure. The increasing number of standardized and well calibrated seismometers around the world, the availability of data from large explosions, and the increasing use of computers in data analysis are recent developments which have increased the potential of the classical body wave method. The development of long-period instruments, including seismometers, gravimeters, tiltmeters and strain gauges was the key factor involved in the rise of long-period seismology, which includes the study of long-period surface waves, free oscillations and long term deformations which supplement data from classical seismology regarding the interior of the Earth.
