How to be a Causal Pluralist

Abstract

[Introduction] It has become increasingly common to espouse some form of pluralism about causation. Papers have appeared with titles like "A Tale of Two Effects" (Hitchcock 2001a), "Two Concepts of Causation" (Hall 2004), "Causation: One Word, Many Things" (Cartwright 2004), and "Plurality in Causality" (Campaner and Galavotti, this volume). But just what is involved in being a causal pluralist? And is causal pluralism itself a unified concept, or is there a plurality of pluralisms?
