Paul W. Sternberg

Abstract

Paul W. Sternberg was born on Long Island, New York. He was an undergraduate at Hampshire College, obtaining his B.A. in 1978. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from MIT in 1984 for work on nematode development with Robert Horvitz, and pursued postdoctoral research in yeast molecular genetics with Ira Herskowitz at UCSF. He joined the faculty of the California Institute of Technology, where he is now the T.H. Morgan Professor of Biology. He has been an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1989, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2000, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2009. He is also PI of WormBase, a PI of the Gene Ontology Consortium, and was 2011 President of the Genetics Society of America. In addition to his research on many aspects of biology in Caenorhabditis elegans and other nematode biology, he co-founded WormBase, WormBook and Textpresso.
