Hong Kong Full-Scale Structural Control Initiative

Abstract

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in cooperation with the California. Institute of Technology, has created the Hong Kong Full-Scale Structural Control Initiative to facilitate the development and application of structural response control and health monitoring technologies. The goal is to improve the safety, serviceability and economy of civil structures required to resist severe environmental loads such as strong winds. One of the principal objectives of the Initiative is to provide a full-scale structure in Hong Kong with state-of-the-art equipment for the experimental study of structural response control and real-time monitoring. This test facility will be available to the international structural control community to use. It is hoped that this will not only advance the development and commercial application of these new technologies, but will also serve as an international focal point which promotes interaction between researchers, industry, and the public sector from many countries. This paper describes the goals of the Initiative and preliminary plans for the test structure, associated facilities, a research program, and international cooperation.
